EU Commission Urges Ecommerce Platforms to Improve Security


As cold weather approaches and we move towards the end of 2020, the second wave COVID-19 cases appears to be on the horizon. Considering the risk, the European Commission is getting stricter about online scams related to the resurgence of COVID-19 cases.

On Friday, the EU Commission insisted all and major ecommerce platforms to create a stronger fence around their sites in an effort to prevent fraudsters from selling fake products as cures for coronavirus and using offers to steal important customer information.

“We know from our earlier experience that fraudsters see this pandemic as an opportunity to trick European consumers,” Commissioner for Justice Didier Reynders said in a statement.

The online shopping platforms that are joining forces with the EU Commission to fight consumer scams include Amazon, Alibaba, Ebay, Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Rakuten, Wish and Verizon.

The Commission agreed that since March of 2020, these platforms have made significant efforts to stop and remove millions of illegal listings and ads related to COVID-19.

The commission also agreed that even though tech giants like Facebook, Google, Microsoft and Twitter have taken useful actions to eliminate and control the spread of false and misleading information about coronavirus, there is still a ship of harmful and inappropriate content floating around on the internet.
